Know when your tyres are worn out and it is time to change to new ones

Buying new tyres is an important investment and from the start you will need to make sure that you maintain them well. Even if you do take care of them as good as you can, they will wear out over time and it is important to know when this time has come. From the day that you have new tyres it is important to track the tread depth and how it decreases over time. It is good to keep a log of the tread depth. Initially you will not check it as often, maybe every 6 months, but then maybe every 3rd month until you can start to predict when they will be worn out. When you are getting close to 4 mm remaining tread depth you can check even more often to ensure that you change before you lose vital properties of the tyres that can be lifesaving.

It is also important to track differences between the front tyres and the rear tyres. If there is a big difference in the wear between rear and front tyres, you should rotate the tyres by changing place of the tyres, so that the difference can be eliminated. This is what is referred to as tyre rotation. If you use two sets of tyres during the year by using summer tyres and winter tyres, then it is natural to do the rotation at the instance that you change tyres, however if you drive a lot during the year you might have to rotate the tyres more often.

You should to manage the rotation by tracking the wear through the tread depth and change when the difference is between 2-3 mm. If you have a hybrid or an electrical car, the tyre wear is higher due to the higher torque. This means that it might not be enough to rotate every 6-month, especially if you drive a lot. It is even more important that you monitor the wear. Special tyres should be used for these vehicles that have a higher wear resistance. If you instead of having two set of tyres for the year and instead opt to have one set, like all-weather tyres that can be used all-year round even during winter conditions, then you will have to rely on the 2-3 mm difference between the front and rear tyres to know when to rotate the tyres.

There are other factors that can impact the wear of the tyres; one is the tyre pressure where a low tyre pressure increases the rolling resistance, which increases the tyre wear. It also causes the vehicle to consumer more fuel when you drive. It is important to check when you stop at a petrol station for fuel. Cheap tyres will also wear faster also due to their inherent higher rolling resistance. This means that the initially cheap tyres will wear out faster and will cause your vehicle to consume more fuel.  Since this is not a good equation and will end up costing you more money at the same time as you are driving with tyres that are less safe. Therefore, you should make sure that you invest in high quality premium tyres.
